Hemodialysis is the process by which the blood is cleansed from dangerous toxins in the body such as urea, creatinine and excess fluid. The patient is hooked to a hemodialysis machine through an opening in his vein called a fistula. The process can take quite a while and there are many side effects that can occur if the patient is not monitored properly. This is where a person who has passed his dialysis technician training comes in. A dialysis technician ensures the patients safety while he is hooked to a dialysis machine. It takes great skill and patience in order to become a dialysis technician since it takes more than just knowledge to work in the clinical setting.

During the beginning of their shift, dialysis technicians check the instruments to make sure that everything is functioning well enough by means of surgical technology. They make sure that the area is clean and secure from any form of dust and debris as the patients they are tending to have a higher risk for infection than most patients. When the patient arrives, they explain the procedure and give information on how the machine works on the body. They also need to explain the possible side effects of the procedure. They initially take the patient’s vital signs so they have a baseline to compare on the succeeding vital signs and then hook the patient to the dialysis machine. The weight is also taken because most patient loose weight after the procedure.

Though many patients report minimal discomfort during the procedure, first time dialysis patients often suffer from severe lightheadedness which could complicate the procedure if left alone. In the dialysis technician training program, a person will be able to know what starts these complications and be able to intervene before such complications can get out of hand.

Once the procedure is done, the dialysis technician compares the initial lab findings with the current findings and reports these to the physician. He is also responsible for sterilizing all the equipment used during the procedure and ensure that the patient walks out of the clinic safely.

Some states require formal dialysis technician training, but other states allow inservice dialysis technician training. However, it is a good idea to enroll at a vocational school or community college because those who have graduated after formal schooling earn higher.

In order to enroll at a vocational school, you must be a high school graduate with a diploma or equivalent. Those who have high scores in math and science will often fare well in the training program. In training, aspiring dialysis technicians will learn all about anatomy and physiology, first aid, CPR, assessing a patient before during and after treatment.

Once you graduate from a dialysis technician training program, you will have to get an exam in order to earn your certificate and licensure. The holder of a certificate is much loved by employers because it means that he has passed the necessary requirements in order to become a dialysis technician.
