First, you would have to finish a two to four year course from your local college or university that offers medical Ekg technician training programs. The course should include trainings in either invasive or non-invasive vascular therapy. An associate degree for entry level employment is usually required from cardiovascular technologists. Other than completing the academic program, you should also have on-the-job trainings. Some employers will even require you to obtain a professional credential.

The first year is solely dedicated to core courses and the following years would be on specialized instruction in your chosen area – invasive cardiovascular, noninvasive cardiovascular or noninvasive cardiovascular technology. And for those who have completed allied healthcare profession, they are asked to finish the year of specialized instruction only. Cardiovascular technology educational programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Professionals. As of 2009, there are 168 accredited programs. If you attend any one of these programs, then you can get your professional certification.

If you are an EKG technician, you will be personally trained by your supervisor or a cardiologist. The on-the-job training will last for about four to six weeks. Employers prefer to train people who already have healthcare job experiences. Most of the EKG technicians are pursuing further studies to become a technologist. If you would like to perform Holter monitoring, your hands-on training may last for eighteen to twenty four months. There are also one year training programs about basic EKGs and Holter monitoring that may serve as a substitute for the hands-on training.

Credentialing is actually an option. You can be an EKG technician even without it. But you must remember that it is considered an edge with most of the employers. EKG graduates that have credentials have a better chance with employment.  Most credentials will require you to finish an accredited education before you are qualified to take the credentialing examination. Pursuing further education is usually needed to maintain your certification.

Cardiovascular technicians and technologist must be apt and particular with details. You should be able to follow specific instructions and perform your duties well. You should also be good in dealing with people. Building rapport with patients will make them feel at ease and prepare them for the tests. You should also be knowledgeable about the procedures because you will be conversing with both the doctors and the patients.

EKG technician careers pay fairly well. The average salary for EKG technicians who have work experience for about one to four years can range from $10 to $16 per hour. EKG technicians who have more years of experience receive an average of $18 per hour. The salary is usually different due to factors like your skills and your employer. Annually you can earn as low $25,000 and as high as $65,000.
